Index to the Bureau Specialist and United States Specialist - Volumes 1-60 (1930-1989) - 1990 - Hard Bound in Maroon Cloth, spine stamped in gilt -354pp  -------
Volume 1 - Volume 3 (1930-1932) Reprint 1987 - Hard Bound in Maroon Cloth, spine stamped in gilt - 433pp. - Interesting reading, as the early contributors (a veritable Who's Who) worked out the kinks of this important arm of U.S. philately. - Volume 1 Highlights: Much Coverage of Bureau pre-cancels and plate varieties, as well as extensive coverage of the issues of 1929 and 1930, including the Zeppelins; Volume 2 Highlights: A new emphasis on plate numbers and plate number checklists, as well as a continued interest in Bureau pre-cancels and plate varieties and extensive coverage of the issues of 1930 and 1931. A new die, the Type II of the 2¢ of the 1922 Series (Scott's 599A and 634A) was announced, although it was noted "it will probably take a keen eye to locate a new type on these stamps". Of note: an advertisement for the rare one cent foreign entry on the two cent of 1908, (now listed as a variety of Scott 344) was offered by C. W. Bedford, chairman of the plate varieties committee, in a plate strip of 20 for $9.50. The shift is well-diagrammed by Bedford and makes a convincing argument. The existence of this "foreign entry" is now in dispute. Volume 3 Highlights: The distinction between "shifted transfer" and "double transfer" is clearly defined. Continued emphasis on plate varieties and Bureau pre-cancels. -------
